Crystal Bridge
Shanghai, China
Some bridges help people cross from one place to another. Crystal Bridge is designed to bring people together. The 246,000-square-meter mixed-use development reimagines what a commercial district can be by transforming the traditional office building into an active public realm where workplaces, retail, culture and community converge.
Positioned at the gateway to Shanghai's Hongqiao CBD, the project strengthens connections to the metro, revitalizes surrounding infrastructure and creates a vibrant destination that extends far beyond the workday.
Rather than organizing the development around a collection of office towers, a layered network of plazas, gardens and gathering spaces centers on the signature Cloud Garden. A dramatic circular opening inspired by a camera’s aperture connects the vibrant plaza below with the landscape above, while retail, workplaces, transit and community amenities are seamlessly woven together into a walkable urban experience that evolves throughout the day and night.
Features
At the heart of the project, the Cloud Garden transforms a traditional skybridge into an elevated public destination. Connecting office towers while overlooking the city below, the bridge creates new opportunities for gathering, collaboration and everyday urban life rather than simply moving people between buildings.
